Wearables

Avery Dennison Medical has been supplying adhesive tapes for the wearables industry for over 20 years. We have a large portfolio of skin contact tapes, tie layer device tapes and cover tapes. Let our team help you find the right solution for your wearable device adhesive needs.

Key Considerations

How do I know what I need when I design my wearable? There are several factors to consider with designing a wearable device. Some important factors to think about are:

  1. How long is the device intended to stick to skin?
  2. What is the demographic of the intended user? Infant, Adult or Elderly?
  3. Where on the body will the device be worn?
  4. What are the activity levels of the user during use? Dynamic or sedentary?

Wearable Device Product Recommendations

Skin Contact Tapes

Avery Dennison Medical has several standard skin contact tapes that are used for both short term adhesion to the skin as well as long term wear. All of our skin contact tapes are approved for skin contact per ISO 10993 biocompatibility.

We have single coated products that have wear times of 24 hours up to 21 days. Our wearable tapes come with silicone, rubber and acrylic adhesive coatings. Some of these products are coated on Non-Woven carriers (PE, PET and PU). The variables with our non-woven PE, PET and PU is the stretch and breathability of the Non-woven. Another variable about the non-woven carrier is the ability for the carrier to be heat-staked (sonic welded). PET non-woven carriers are the most common material that is used when device manufacturers are heat staking the skin contact patch to the actual device. We also have short term wearable single coated silicone tapes as well as foam tape carriers (PE, EVA, PolyOlefin). Wearable foam tapes are a great option for quick stick monitoring devices that are only intended to be on the skin for 3 days or less.

Tie Layer Tapes

Avery Dennison Medical specializes in tie layer adhesives to stick two different materials together. We know how important it is to find the right solution for adhering your wearable components together. Whether our clients are looking for a permanent bond or a temporary, removable layer in their device we have the right adhesive. We offer several standard double coated products for your tie layer. Some of the standards in the wearable device industry are double coated rubbers, acrylics and silicone-acrylic differential tapes.

Cover/ Overlay Tapes

The need for Cover Tapes (overlay tapes) in the wearables market space is growing exponentially every day. With the use of wearable devices growing into the billions of units over the next 5 years, the need to protect the device from moisture and dirt is in the forefront of our product development. Cover/ overlay tapes are used as waterproof “covers” that are applied over the top of a stick to skin wearable device in order to protect the device from getting wet or dirty during every day use. Typically cover tapes are worn for 20 minutes up to 3 days before they are removed and a new cover/ overlay patch is applied. They are a simple and inexpensive solution to protecting your wearable device.  Our Cover Tape products give the end user a short term and long term option. Avery Dennison Medical’s cover tape products offer a stretchy PU film with acrylic adhesive on one side that is ideal for making patches to cover your wearable device. Some common usages of our cover/ overlay tapes are seen in the CGM wearable space as well as many other wearable devices that need to stay on the skin for over 24 hours.
