Improving Patient Care with Innovative Wound and Skin Care Solutions

Over the past 50 years, wound and skin care have evolved from being primarily reactive to becoming proactive and personalized. The integration of advanced technologies, new materials, and evidence-based practices has significantly improved wound healing outcomes and quality of life for patients.

Key developments during the latest decades include the adoption of moist wound healing, bioactive materials, and Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT). Infection control has improved with antimicrobial dressings and new antiseptics, while diagnostic tools, patient empowerment, and telemedicine have further enhanced the quality and outcomes of patient care.

Avery Dennison Medical’s Innovative Solutions for Wound and Skin Care

Since the mid 1970s, Avery Dennison Medical has been at the forefront of these developments with one clear goal in mind: enhance patient care and make the work of healthcare professionals more efficient and comfortable.

One of our main contributions to the wound care industry has been the development of a significant range of hydrocolloid dressings. The hydrocolloids we develop for wound care applications have the capacity to facilitate moist wound healing, resulting in a better healing process. Moreover, by adding components to our existing core technologies, we can bring additional functionalities and more comfort to the end user. Our material science engineers have vast experience in altering existing hydrocolloid formulations, for example hydrocolloids with wound odor control, or additives such as glycerine and Vitamin E for skin conditioning.

Avery Dennison Medical has also developed a variety of silicone wound dressings, known for their easy application, repositionability, and removal, minimizing trauma and reducing pain during dressing changes. This gentle adherence helps preserve the integrity of all skin types, in particular fragile or compromised skin, and promotes a more comfortable healing process for patients.

Super Absorbent Polymer (SAP) products also play a crucial role in wound management, by absorbing large amounts of exudate, effectively managing moisture levels at the wound site. This prevents skin maceration, which can delay healing and cause additional skin damage.

A more recent, innovative contribution to the medical field is Thin Absorbent Skin Adhesive (TASA™): a proprietary adhesive formulation developed by Avery Dennison Medical. By combining an acrylic adhesive with hydrocolloid components, our experts created a thin adhesive that allows air and moisture to pass freely. TASA™ is useful for a wide range of advanced wound dressings for pressure sores, leg ulcers, superficial wounds, skin tears and postoperative wounds. Its ultra-thin profile, superior conformability, and secure skin adhesive make it an ideal choice for dressing difficult areas. TASA™ allows caregivers to observe the wound without removing the dressing. This transparency facilitates continuous monitoring of the healing process, reducing the need for frequent dressing changes and minimizing disruption to the wound bed.

Partnerships with our customers have also led to some great developments in the skin care market, including debridement technology and skin barrier products.

Amorphous Hydrogel is a sterile, clear, and translucent primary dressing that helps manage dry, necrotic, and sloughy wounds. The gel provides a moist environment at the wound surface and assists in the debridement and removal of necrotic and other devitalized material.

Our skin barrier products provide a protective layer that helps maintain moisture balance. Barrier cream protects dry, chafed, red or irritated skin by moisturizing the skin and providing a long-lasting barrier.

Barrier film is designed to protect intact or damaged skin from bodily fluids, adhesives, and friction in the areas of peristomal and periwound skin protection, incontinence skin care and adhesive trauma prevention.

These innovations collectively contribute to more effective wound management and faster healing.

Emerging Trends in Wound and Skin Care

The wound and skin care industry is increasingly focusing on sustainability and ethical considerations. Avery Dennison Medical exemplifies this commitment by using FSC-certified papers, PET carriers with 70% recycled content, local sourcing, and energy-efficient technologies like our Concentrated Solar Thermal platform and windmill (Turnhout) to reduce our carbon footprint and landfill waste. We include ingredients like Vitamin E, reflecting ongoing innovation in sustainable medical solutions. Plant-based skin care ingredients, such as Vitamin E, are known for their soothing and regenerative properties, which can enhance skin repair and patient comfort.

New technologies promise to further revolutionize wound and skin care, improving patient outcomes and quality of life. Key developments include personalized medicine for tailored treatments, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) for enhanced wound assessment and treatment optimization, and nanotechnology for targeted drug delivery and antimicrobial dressings. Wearable devices that monitor wound healing in real-time are also gaining traction.

As part of Avery Dennison Materials and Solutions groups, we stand at the convergence of the physical and digital realms, working closely with our Intelligent Labels, RFID, and IoT divisions. At the forefront of materials science, we continuously develop novel patient-centered wound care solutions, in collaboration with major partners, universities, and tech hubs.
