Creative ideation sessions allow us to identify innovative solutions that do not yet exist in the market. In collaboration with our corporate front-end innovations framework, we work through these possible new solutions and evaluate how innovative and impactful they are for the end user.

A recent example of such a corporation-wide innovation project involved a joint effort with Avery Dennison Smartrac, where we developed a wound dressing with RFID, illustrating Avery Dennison Medical’s proactive approach to meeting evolving demands. By harnessing RFID's capabilities for moisture detection in dressings, these innovative medical solutions have the potential to streamline wound care processes and provide healthcare providers and patients with real-time insights.

Avery Dennison Medical is also committed to customer-centric innovation which extends to collaborative advanced R&D projects, where we create new solutions or enhance standard products with novel materials and innovate in response to customer needs. We jointly develop solutions to address specific challenges in wound management by clearly defining user requirements, actively engaging with customers, and leveraging both their and our own expertise and materials. A current project includes an antimicrobial dressing with a novel mechanism of action, developed in collaboration with a partner company. Another illustration of such a collaboration is our partnership with a customer that led to the development of a whole new range of superabsorbent dressings with a novel anti-odor layer. This meets the customers’, the healthcare professionals’, the patients’ and carers’ needs, helping to manage exudate and odor at the same time.

As part of the larger Avery Dennison, we work with a vast network of R&D excellence centers in materials science, engineering and analysis, research institutions and partner bodies. This enables us to extensively test new solutions before introducing them to the market, making sure the prototype meets or exceeds the initial user requirements. 

Committed to delivering products of the highest quality and safety standards, our manufacturing facilities across Mentor (USA), Turnhout (Belgium), and Longford (Ireland) adhere to ISO and GMP regulations, underscoring Avery Dennison Medical’s commitment to excellence. 

Through standard and novel testing methodologies, we validate the performance and reliability of our products, from adhesive coatings to wound dressings. Avery Dennison Medical’s experts are onsite for active R&D testing, assisting our clients to manage the complex reality of developing customized medical solutions for challenging applications.

Supporting Wound Healing and Patient Comfort

Avery Dennison Medical’s portfolio of wound and skin care products reflects the company’s dedication to innovation and excellence. 

For instance, our different types of silicone adhesives have revolutionized wound dressing applications by ensuring patient comfort without compromising on efficacy. Silicone medical adhesives, known for their gentle release from fragile skin, coupled with strong repositionable adhesives and hydrophobic characteristics, are the gold standard for many advanced wound care and medical device applications. These high-quality silicone adhesives serve for instance as a component in the development of children’s eye patches and sensors for neonates, providing atraumatic removal for the most sensitive skin.

Avery Dennison Medical has also innovated a proprietary adhesive TASA™, which is a thin, acrylic, highly absorbent adhesive that allows air and moisture to pass freely through both the breathable adhesive and film or nonwoven carrier. Its fluid handling capacity (FHC) supports extended wear time and reduces the likelihood of skin maceration. In some wound care applications, it replaces thicker hydrocolloids, making TASA™ a more sustainable choice.

Superabsorbent dressings capable of high to very high exudate level management are also developed, and continuously enhanced by our R&D experts, as well as various skincare products, including barrier creams and adhesive removers, further demonstrating our commitment to addressing diverse clinical needs.
